Through working with the old Brothers Grimm renditions in German, I found that the female principle was yearning to whisper and shout as it had been sorely ignored. My translations of the stories were the inspiration for the adaptations that formed themselves and chose my voice as their contemporary vessel. My gratitude goes to the 13th Sister of Wisdom and her timely visit.
“A Brittle Enchantment” is my adaptation of the popular tale of the Lady Ragnall and Sir Gawain. When three story listeners in separate parts of the country asked me to “tell it again” long before I had considered telling it for the first time, I took it as a direct memo from the Muse to pay attention and get to work.
New England folklore has provided the anecdotal seed which became the blossom of “Edith and Bessie.,”
Telling these stories always brings me to a place of high delight. My hope is that you too will enjoy the journey here that attempts to balance the raucous and sublime components of that ever-tantalizing morsel we call love.
